Starting in 2024, United Airlines MileagePlus travelers will be able to achieve status much more easily, without increasing points to reach frequent flyer tiers.
Loyal United Airlines MileagePlus travelers will have new ways to earn Premier qualifying points in 2024, especially if they have a United credit card from Chase.
THE the airline announced new ways to earn loyalty points without increasing the number required to reach status levels.
Points earned by credit card count for all statuses with no annual limit
In previous years, United travelers who had a Chase co-branded credit card could earn a limited number of Premier qualifying points with their spending up to a maximum of 15,000 points per year. In 2024, everything will change.
At the start of the year, cardholders will earn 25 Premier eligible points for every $500 spent per eligible card on eligible MileagePlus credit cards. Additionally, all eligible points earned through spending will count toward all elite statuses, including the first Premier 1K tier.
Additionally, the number of points travelers can earn through spending is increasing. On the United Club Infinite card, cardholders will be able to earn 10,000 Premier qualifying points on eligible purchases, an increase of 2,000 points from 2023. Finally, the airline is also removing the 15,000 annual point cap Premier qualification for spending in all Chase. United cards, allowing travelers to earn infinite points towards their future status.
To help current elite players get a head start on their 2024 goals, United are offering a starting bonus to open the year. Silver flyers will receive 250 starting points, Gold flyers will receive 500 points, Platinum flyers will receive 750 points, while Premier 1K elites will have a head start of 1,250 points.
The number of points or flights required to earn status will not change for the next loyalty year. Each tier will continue to have the opportunity to earn status on a combination of flights and points, or on points only.
Changes reflect broader trends in airline loyalty
United’s move for 2024 fits a broader trend in aviation loyalty programs. Delta Air Lines recently made changes to its 2024 schedule, which see flyers earn Medallion status based on their spending alone.
