Dubbed the ‘Oscars of Fashion’, we’ve seen fashion’s biggest hits push the boundaries a step forward with their avant-garde ensembles that are very different to us, progressive and a sight to behold.
Of Serena Williams, recipient of the Fashion Icon Award highlighting the structure with balloon-shaped sleeves, to host the evening Anne Hathaway showing a new interpretation of denim and a famous stylist Law Cockroach abstract suit bottoms, many celebrities looked innovative while others were clearly imitated.
Here are some of the best and worst looks from the red carpet at last night’s CFDA Awards.
Serena Williams in Thom Browne
After giving birth to her second baby girl, Adira, on Aug. 22, Serena looked glamorous to the nines in a black sequinned Thom Browne dress with voluminous, embellished shoulder sleeves and an exaggerated train. For her accessories, Williams opted for a bold diamond necklace and pearl-studded earrings.
Kim Kardashian in Chrome Hearts
If anyone tapped into understated luxury, it was Kim Kardashian who kept things simple in a backless Chrome Hearts leather dress adorned with multiple criss-cross patches placed throughout. Keeping her jewelry to a minimum, Kardashian wore layered rings to complement her black stiletto nails. Kim’s look this year was low-key compared to the latex ensemble she rocked last year.
Lala Anthony in Saint Sintra
Lala Anthony glowed in a chocolate-bronze Saint Sintra satin corset bodysuit that she layered with a long, matching satin dress and teamed with dark black stockings. She pulled her hair back into a tight bun that looked appropriate with the bold gold choker necklace that completed her look.
Mary J. Blige in Christian Siriano
With the holiday season on the horizon, Mary J. Blige showed us she was two steps ahead in a sheer, sequinned black and silver Christian Siriano gown that could easily be worn to a Christmas gala or New Year.
Coco Rocha in Christian Siriano
Blige wasn’t the only one wearing Christian Siriano, as the designer himself posed next to his muse, model Coco Rocha, who looked captivating in a structured, textured black top, with a pink slit maxi skirt and champagne satin platforms. Her circular black hat was happily the icing on the cake.
Alton Mason in Dolce & Gabbana and Chrome Hearts
Alton Mason, let us know he hit the gym showing off his killer abs in a fur-trimmed black coat from Dolce & Gabbana, with camo cargo pants and a Chrome Hearts belt with layered chains.
Roach Law in Luar
If anyone’s going to serve us a sketch, it’s definitely celebrity stylist Law Roach who opted for a khaki-colored Luar suit with a white shirt and oversized blush tie. Most notably, her cut-out bottoms revealed her Calvin Klein underwear and black fishnet stockings. It was definitely one of the most fashion-forward looks of the evening.
Saweetie in Cult Gaia
We loved how rapper Saweetie took risks and played with shapes at the CFDA Awards in a straw fabric Cult Gaia dress that had innovative 3D shapes and cutouts at her hips. Her metallic gold platform sandals made her ensemble very futuristic.
Anne Hathaway in Ralph Lauren
Looking like the quintessential Ralph Lauren poster girl, Anne Hathaway wore a denim corset top with a floral lightweight denim maxi skirt that had a long train and felt on-brand from the American designer.
June Ambroise in Bibhu Mohapatra
We know creative director June Ambrose loves a beautiful Bibhu Mohapatra gown and the icon herself looks spectacular in an off-the-shoulder black tulle pleated gown that she wore with a $7,995 Judith Leiber TV clutch and A declaration. @khiatullae bunny ear hat.
Ayesha Curry in Diotima
Ayesha Curry served filet galore in a red and black Diotima knit that had cutouts everywhere and was unlike anything we’ve seen on the red carpet. We loved her fearlessness and provocative elegance.
Winnie Harlow in Marc Jacobs
Model Winnie Harlow can do no wrong, and the gorgeous model who was a star of Halloween this year, cleaned up nice and clean to attend the CFDA Awards in a black polka dot March Jacobs dress that looked prestigious and monumental . Her Marc Jacobs patent leather platforms were the perfectly calculated risk and her jewelry sparkled against her beautiful vitiligo skin.
Vanessa Hudgens in Vera Wang
Although Vanessa Hudgen’s glamor looked impeccable, her dress and gloves seemed traditional and we wish she would have thought a little more outside the box. Still, her long black gloves were very on-trend and she could have easily taken it up a notch by adding layered rings for some high-fashion appeal.
