The crisis in the two largest hospitals in the Gaza Strip, more and more in the center of the Israeli military operation, intensified on Monday, as Israel continued to claim that Hamas militants were hiding in civilian buildings. Gaza’s largest hospital, al-Shifa, is surrounded by Israeli troops; at least 32 people have died in three days, a Gaza health official said. The second largest hospital in the enclave, al-Quds in Gaza City, was surrounded by Israeli forces Monday morning and unable to evacuate its 300 remaining patients and medical workers due to shelling and gunfire, a spokeswoman for the Society of Palestinian Red Crescent, which runs the hospital. Israel said Monday its forces had killed 21 militants in the area. The Washington Post was unable to independently verify these claims.
