Independent Scotch Whiskey Maker Douglas Laing & Co. introduced its brand new “Island Malt”, the Rock Island Rum Cask edition.
A statement from Douglas Laing noted that this latest bottling follows their 2022 Rock Island Mezcal edition, this one showcasing the maritime spirit of Rock Island finished in Mezcal casks, which imparted a smooth smoke.
For the Rock Island Rum Cask edition, it was finished exclusively in casks of Plantation rum sourced from the Caribbean islands of Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad.

Distiller’s notes show that this blend of single cask single malts will have flavors of salted caramel, toasty oak, brown sugar and a hint of smoke.
The new bottle’s packaging features tropical colors of blues, reds and greens accented with gold foil detailing. The limited-edition bottling boasts 46.8% ABV, with no coloring or chill filtration.
Emma Reid, Rock Island Brand Manager, said this expression of Rock Island highlights a harmony of flavors, “from peat-smoked Scottish ribs to warm Caribbean climes, as it brings together two iconic spirits. We can’t wait to share this whiskey with Rock Island fans around the world.
Jonas Indesteege, brand manager at Plantation Rum, explained that it was during many trips around the world that Alexandre Gabriel (the creator of Plantation Rum) jumped at the chance to discover production techniques, traditions, and the innovations of its peers… passionate distillers, brewers and winegrowers.
“These encounters have allowed him to form real friendships and, fortunately for lovers of unique spirits, to develop exclusive collaborations and experimentations that give rise to deliciously unexpected rums full of originality,” said Indesteege. “While visiting Douglas Laing & Co., he found a real connection that was the start of an exceptional partnership.”
The Rock Island Rum Cask edition will soon be released worldwide and is expected to have a retail price of £65.
Rock Island joined Douglas Laing’s Remarkable Regional Malts range in 2015, and the Scotch Small Batch is a marriage of single cask single malts from Orkney, Arran, Jura and Islay.
